In the DC Universe, Superman is famous not only for his superhuman strength and his ability to fly, but also for being able to see through objects with his “X-ray vision.” If you read Superman comics as a kid (or as an adult) or watched any of the Superman movies or television shows, you might have been extremely envious of his ability to see beyond the surface of things. And if you were like many kids, you probably fantasized about what you would do with X-ray vision if you were lucky enough to have it.
Well, here at Enhanced Scanning, we are also able to see what is hidden beneath the ground, behind walls, or within concrete slabs—with the use of specialized technology, of course. While we occasionally use X-ray technology to accomplish this, more often, we use ground penetrating radar (GPR). And just like Superman uses his powers for good, we also use our ability to see beyond the surface for the benefit of others!
Ground penetrating radar is really quite amazing technology. Unlike X-ray technology, using GPR doesn’t give off any harmful radiation. Also, unlike X-ray, it provides our technicians with immediate readouts that they can then interpret on site. They can then tell our clients and their contractors right away where it is safe to dig, drill, or cut, as well as what areas they need to avoid. (With X-ray, the results typically need to be processed elsewhere before they can communicate the information to our clients, which can lead to project delays as they wait for the results.)
GPR is the epitome of non-destructive scanning technology. It is efficient, affordable, and accurate. And when we say it’s “non-destructive,” we really mean it. If we’re scanning the ground for buried utilities, there is no digging involved. If we’re scanning a cinderblock wall or a concrete slab, no holes need to be drilled or cuts need to be made. All we need is access to the surface to be able to tell our clients what is located beneath it and where.
Having an accurate picture of exactly where buried or embedded hazards are located saves our clients from both expensive delays and even more expensive repairs on their projects. While most contractors take into account that there will be some delays and extra expenses along the way, avoiding major ones whenever possible—like hitting a buried utility line or damaging reinforcing bars (rebar) in concrete—is always best!
